What is a Slack Channel?
A Slack Channel is a designated location to post specific types of communications depending on the purpose of the channel.
A Slack Channel is characterized with a "#" in front if the topic name for the kind of conversation that should happen in that channel.
What is the difference between a DM and a Channel?
A Slack DM can be sent to anyone in the Slack workspace. DMs are typically used for private communications or communications that do not require ongoing conversation.
If you have an ongoing need for a DM group then you may want to consider creating a specific channel for that purpose.
Can I customize my Slack?
Yes we recommend everyone customize their slack to their liking. You can do this by opening the preferences page within Slack.
You can customize the look and feel with "Themes" as well as what will appear on the sidebar of your Slack Menu.
We also recommend you organize your channels as needed by created channel categories in the sidebar or by "starring" channels that you use most frequently.
What does "@channel" mean?
When a message is written in a slack channel which includes "@channel" it will notify everyone in that channel of the message.
You can also "@" specific people to notify them without notifying the whole channel.
What is a thread?
You can create a thread underneath a Slack message by clicking on that message and choosing "reply in thread".
This will create a conversation under the original message rather than adding more messages to the main area of the channel.
We recommend using threads when having an ongoing conversation about a message in a Slack channel so that multiple conversations can happen at the same time without overlapping and causing confusion to people int he channel.
